Hastings: Jack In The Green Festival - May 2008

A small gallery of pictures taken at the Jack In The Green Festival held over the Bank Holiday weekend around old and New Hastings and ending in the castle.

The festival was revived in 1983 by the Mad Jacks Morris Dancers but has a history going back several hundred years.

The Jack In The Green is a result of a floral ‘arms race’ where various groups would compete with each other on May Day celebrations to make garlands that were bigger and more ornate until eventually they made ones that covered the whole body - Hence the leaf covered and flower crowned Jack In The Green.
